Meet Dr. Charmian Banks

Dr. Charmian Banks is a compassionate and highly competent consultant gastroenterologist with over a decade of experience. She is held in very high regard by her patients, not least because she will listen to your concerns, explain things to you and give you time to have your questions answered.

Graduated with Bachelor of Medicine from the University of Southampton in 2000. Member and then Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (2016). Completed postgraduate diploma in nutritional medicine (University of Surrey) in 2017.

Consultant Gastroenterologist at Royal Surrey since 2012. Lead for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) which includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Previously lead for the Nutritional Support Team. Contributed to the National Guidelines for Diagnosis and treatment of IBD, 2024.

Founder of the eating disorders service, with national expertise in management of conditions such as anorexia nervosa. Contributed to the National Guidelines for medical treatment of eating disorders 2023.

Founder of the breath test service – to assist in the diagnosis of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and lactose/fructose intolerance.

Experienced endoscopist offering upper and lower GI endoscopies – diagnostic and therapeutic. Latest technology: accredited in minimally invasive capsule endoscopy.
